“I was born in Iran, a country in the Middle East. There has always been war in the Middle East, and my own childhood was marked by war. My home was next to a camp for victims of the Iran-Iraq conflict, so I spent my childhood among children who had lost their homes. My interest in photography and the sensitivity I developed living on the margins of war made me what I am, a photojournalist.”
